Virginia’s trash intake picked up in 2015, according to the state Department of Environmental Quality’s annual solid waste report. Virginia’s facilities took in 500,000 more tons of trash in 2015 compared with 2014.

The amount of waste coming in from other states also increased last year by 3.4 percent, or 100,000 tons. That’s a reversal from 2014, when out-of-state trash decreased by .61 percent. The state handled a total of 20.7 million tons of waste in 2015, with landfills around the region handling 1.7 million tons last year alone.
The majority of the trash handled throughout the state, 15.3 million tons, came from within Virginia. The rest, 5.4 million tons, came from other jurisdictions. The bulk of out-of-state trash originated in Maryland, New York, the District of Columbia, North Carolina and New Jersey.
The majority of the waste in Virginia was landfilled on-site. Incinerating trash was the second-most common way refuse was handled.
