The Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency might face a cash penalty next year, now that its proposed ash-for-trash deal with Cortland County has been shelved.
The Cortland County Legislature voted last month not to accept ash from OCRRA's trash incinerator at the Cortland landfill, effectively killing the ash-for-trash proposal.
"Cortland, obviously, voted against accepting the ash,'' said Ryan McMahon, chairman of the Onondaga County Legislature. "There's no reason why we would consider taking their trash without that. At this point, to me, the issue is off the table.''
That leaves OCRRA with a potential garbage shortfall that could force it to pay roughly $150,000 in penalties to the operator of OCRRA's trash incinerator near Jamesville.
