WWF, Penn State Researchers Study Using Food Waste for Animal Feed

About 14.7 million tons of food waste in the U.S. could be used for animal feed. 

WWF, in partnership with Penn State University and Quantis, researched the viability of using food waste as feed, particularly: 

  1. Food waste from retail outlets fed to black soldier fly larvae, processed into meal.

  2. Food waste from retail outlets processed into a feed ingredient.

  3. Bakery by-products from food manufacturing plants.

The results found that while there were different levels of environmental impact, tradeoffs exist and more research is needed.
