Chicago Waiting Out Strike

Chicago --The garbage strike that began Wednesday between the Teamsters Locals 731 and 301 and the Chicago Area Refuse Haulers Association has left trash, recycling and yard waste lingering on curbs and in driveways while collections and operations at several Lake County landfills and transfer stations have ceased. A meeting is set for 11:15 a.m. this morning to determine an emergency plan in case the strike continues, according to news sources. Some officials are expressing concern facilities such as jails and hospitals will be troublesome because they produce waste more rapidly than residents. Small businesses and residents are being asked to double-bag all trash while the strike endures and to keep food waste separate.
