Styrofoam Recycling Pilot Program Underway in Northeast Kingdom

Northeast Kingdom, Vermont is upping its recycling game with a newly implemented styrofoam recycling process.

In an attempt to keep the material out of landfills, the Lyndonville Recycling Center has bought a machine that extracts the large amount of air out of expanded polystyrene foam into a dense ingot. Fifty-pound blocks of this new material are created from four large boxes full of styrofoam and can then be sent to different plants that turn the material into insulation board or trim for houses.

With only one active landfill in the state of Vermont, this could be a great step in reducing the amount of space some waste takes up.
