Retailer Staples is expanding its battery recycling program to include rechargeable and single-use alkaline batteries.

The program expansion comes with help from Staples’ partners ERI and Call2Recycle. The batteries can be dropped off at any Staples store in the United States. In addition, Staples has started a scheme with Call2Recycle that allows customers to collect used batteries from their homes in a special Call2Recycle box that can be returned to a Staples location.

ERI will take the batteries and recycle them at one of its facilities, then deliver recovered materials back into the circular market for reuse.

“Since launching our Recycling Services program with ERI in 2009, together we’ve recycled more than 165 million lbs. of technology. With this addition of battery recycling, we’re working to help prevent nearly three billion batteries from entering landfills each year,” Staples said.
