Colorado Committee Approves Funding for Producer Responsibility Program

This week, the Colorado Joint Budget Committee approved funding for an expanded recycling program that was first signed into law two years ago.

After legislation used two years to study how much the program would cost, the Colorado Committee finally approved a budget on Thursday morning. The program is designed to keep thousands of tons of valuable materials out of landfills.

The new program, the Producer Responsibility Program, will expand recycling services to roughly 700,000 households in Colorado while boosting the recycling rate for packaging, bottles, cans, and boxes to 60%.

The Producer Responsibility Program will look to pass the cost of recycling systems to companies rather than sticking households with the tab.
