Department of Energy Seeks Landfill for Manhattan Project Debris

The Department of Energy is hosting a 30-day comment period to determine where to put decades-old waste from the Manhattan Project work.

The site is called Y-12, and environmental regulators and the community have been discussing plans since a landfill proposal for the radioactive waste was submitted in 2011.

Officials have chosen an area near Oak Ridge Reserve, but the proposal allegedly doesn't have any environmental or human protections if a leak were to happen.
