Everyone knows the three triangular arrows symbol mean that a product is recyclable. But is everything the symbol is on really recyclable? Most shoppers do not know that any product can display the sign, even if it’s not recyclable.
A new bill in California would make it the first state to limit the products that are allowed to feature the mark. As part of the bill, companies that would be allowed to use the symbol only if they can prove the material they use can be recycled in most California communities and is used to make new products.
Through its environmental advertising laws, California already prohibits companies from using words such as “recyclable” or “biodegradable” without supporting evidence.
