When the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio started dumping trash in a new section of the county’s landfill a year ago, dirty diapers, rotting food and broken furniture went in a giant hole 35 feet deep.
Soon enough, you’ll be able to see the Downtown skyline from the top of that heap in southwestern Franklin County.
The landfill takes in about a million tons of garbage a year. It’s dumped, compacted under 10,000-pound wheels and covered with soil, layer by layer.
For years, SWACO, the organization that oversees the landfill, has been focused on where to put the trash, said Ty Marsh, the authority’s executive director.
