Juneau, Alaska's rainy environment has allowed the city's landfill to break down waste at a rapid pace, but that also means that more methane and sulfur are being produced.
Residents of the area are complaining that the burning off of excess gas is not happening as much as it should, creating a smelly situation. Homeowners have reported shutting windows and kids staying away from playgrounds as the odor permeates through nearby neighborhoods.
Landfill operator Waste Management is in the process of upgrading its gas collection system, which means some operations are on hold as maintenance continues. Landfill Manager Eric Vance told KTOO that operations should be back to normal "in a few weeks."
