Granger, Others start Ohio Landfill Gas-to-Energy Facility

A public-private partnership has launched a project to generate electricity from landfill gas near Findlay, Ohio.

The partnership will break ground on the operation later in November, using gas from the Hancock County landfill owned and operated by the county. The agreement is between Granger Energy Services, Buckeye Power, Hancock-Wood Electric Cooperative and Hancock County, the parties said in a news release.

When the Hancock County Generating Station is complete it will have the capacity to generate about 3.2 megawatts of electricity using four Caterpillar 3516 engine generator sets.

The agreement will provide renewable energy to nearly 2,000 homes and businesses through Buckeye Power, a member-owned generation and transmission cooperative supplying power to the electric distribution cooperatives in Ohio, and Hancock-Wood Electric Cooperative, a nonprofit, member-owned electric utility serving 10 northwest Ohio counties.

Lansing, Mich.-based Granger designed, permitted and constructed the gas collection and flaring system at the landfill.
