Following a series of fires at the same recycling center in Far East El Paso, county commissioner Carlos Leon has formed a task force to address the ongoing issue.

Leon has been working on the proposed task force for a few months now and is looking to hold property owners accountable.

“It’s comprised of this office, the county attorney’s office, the public works office, so we’re all working together, and the main drive is that we try to prevent these kind of fires,” said Leon.

Currently, Leon has assembled four inspectors who will cover a thousand square miles, going to business, and letting them know if they are in compliance or not.

“They’ll give them a notice to clean up the area and they can give them 30 days /60 days and they’ll come back at that time to make sure that it was cleaned up or it wasn’t if they don’t comply in anyway it’s turned over to the proper justices of peace for that area now he or she will talk to the business owner and say you’re not in compliance and it’s been 30 days and we’re going to fine you x amount,” said Leon.
