A city in Lebanon has been brought to a standstill by an incredible ‘river’ of foul-smelling rubbish.
People have been living in Jdeideh, a city to the north-east of Beirut, since the Neolithic era.
But this astounding mass of rubbish has accumulated in less than eight months. Last July the state authorities closed a major landfill site and there are still no plans to open a replacement.
The beginnings of this particular foul-smelling rubbish pile have been traced to bin bags that were fly-tipped in the courtyard of some residential buildings in November.
