Oregon Students Work to Divert Food Scraps to Composting Program

Eight schools in Bend, Oregon are coming together to divert food scraps to compost bins, hoping to slow down the amount of food waste the schools are producing.

The school district is running with the tagline, “Love Food, Not Waste” to help promote its efforts in reducing how much food ends up in trash cans. The district is also expanding its food-based composing program.

Food from the school’s compost bins will be hauled by Cascade Disposal and Republic Services to Knott Landfills’ commercial composting program. Deschutes County Solid Waste is providing funds for the program to take care of the cost of this composting expansion.

“This is a great way for students to learn how their individual actions can make a difference in their community,” said Jackie Wilson, Sustainability and Energy Specialist for Bend-La Pine Schools.
