Tampa, Fla. Is closing in on reopening the waste-to-energy plant in McKay Bay, where the city has spent millions of dollars.

In the last three months, the city of Tampa spent $100 million to get the facility up and running again. Work was done day and night at the facility. Mayor Jane Caster believes the waste-to-energy plant is more sustainable than burying trash. With the amount of money spent on the facility, Tampa residents can expect to pay, on average, $3 more for garbage collection, but rates haven’t been raised since 2012.

With its new operator, Tampa will be one of the only two cities in the United States that owns and operates its own waste-to-energy facility.
