A 12-ounce can of hornet killer or an eight-ounce container of pepper spray have been identified as the possible substances that sickened employees of Casella Waste Systems late Tuesday morning at a recycling facility in Williston, said Chris Herrick, chief of the state's hazmat response team.
At 4 p.m. on Tuesday, investigators were working with a Casella employee to determine which of the two substances prompted a hazardous-materials scare and an evacuation, and sent a dozen people to the hospital. Twelve people were being evaluated at the University of Vermont Medical Center emergency department Tuesday at 3 p.m., according to a hospital spokesman.
