More materials are being recycled, reused, or composted at all 10 East Riding of Yorkshire Council, UK than ever before, thanks to residents sorting.
The sites encourage residents to pre-sort their mixed waste before arriving. Residents can also use a bag sorting table at each location so that items can be placed in the correct recycling bins, reducing the amount of materials that are thrown in with general waste.
After a trial for this method was done at the Driffield Household Waste Recycling Site in April of last year, the scheme was quickly rolled out to the other remaining sites.
This past June, Driffield recorded a recycling rate of 91%, its highest rate ever recorded. Every other site is reporting higher rates this year as well, plus the Pocklington site is reporting rates higher than 90% for the first time.
“The recycling rates being recorded at these sites go far beyond what we expected,” said Councilor Paul West, the council’s portfolio holder for environmental and transport. “I want to thank to people in the East Riding for supporting our bag sorting scheme."
The 10 sites are reporting a recycling rate of 84.93% for April, May, and June. That is up from 81.63% last year.
