Colgate Teams with TerraCycle to Launch U.K. Recycling Program

Colgate and TerraCycle are teaming up to launch the Colgate Oral Care Recycling Program in the U.K. The program is a free, national recycling initiative for oral products and packaging in the U.K.

For the past few years in the U.S., TerraCycle, in partnership with Colgate and ShopRite, has hosted the annual Recycled Playground Challenge, which aims to teach school students, teachers and communities about preserving healthy smiles and a healthy environment.

For the program in the U.K., once TerraCycle receives toothbrushes, tubs and caps, outer packaging and cartons, they will be separated by composition, shredded and melted into hard plastic pellets that can be remolded to create new recycled products such as benches and construction applications.

The programme is a new recycling fundraising scheme which allows people to recycle for free any brand of toothbrush, toothpaste tubes and caps, toothbrush outer packaging and electric and battery toothbrush heads and toothpaste cartons, while raising money for the school, charity or non-profit of the sender’s choice.

Oral care products and packaging make up a complex mix of materials such as rigid and flexible plastics and bristles, which is why it hasn’t been recyclable through council recycling systems in the UK.
