Coal Ash Ponds Close

Dominion Virginia Power announced Friday it will close all ash ponds in the Commonwealth in compliance with new Environmental Protection Agency federal regulations.

Fluvanna County is home to the Bremo Power Station that houses three ash ponds. Ash is what's left after coal is burned to generate electricity. The fly-ash is piped into bodies of water, creating ash ponds.

Under the new Coal Residuals Regulations, the EPA is requiring the closure of ash ponds at four power stations in Virginia. With the use of new resources, the Bremo station ponds don't hold any value these days.
