AI Comes to Colorado Springs Recycling Center to Help Sort Materials

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has popped up in Colorado Springs to help with recycling.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has popped up in Colorado Springs to help with recycling.

The Republic Services Recycling Center in Colorado Springs has installed the area’s first guided recycling robot and it’s operating at a high rate. The robotic system uses data to pick out recyclable material, picking an average of 80 items per minute, double the rate of a human.

"Aside from the technological advances that are going on in this industry, the education and proper recycling is paramount," said Clint Cordonnier, a Recycling Operations Supervisor at Republic Services Recycling Center.

"Having equipment like this is the wave of the future. It will allow Republic Services to continue to reach their goals of sustainability and diversion.”
