A Louisiana waste district and BioCNG are expanding the district’s biogas fuel operation for fueling compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks.

As part of the project, Progressive Waste Solutions Ld. agreed to buy more CNG waste trucks and have access to the expanded fuel operation as part of its contract with the Washington, La.-based St. Landry Parish Solid Waste Disposal District, according to a news release.

The Madison, Wis.-based BioCNG will design and install a “mother-daughter” BioCNG station format, which it calls the first of its kind in the United States. The original biogas CNG system at St. Landry was commissioned in 2012.

The expansion involves an additional BioCNG system and a remote CNG fueling station. The district can transport the BioCNG to the off-site location in a compressed gas tube trailer.

BioCNG invented the biogas conditioning system that economically produces biogas-based fuel for CNG vehicles.

Vaughan, Ontario-based Progressive Waste is extending its waste hauling contract with the district. Progressive delivers waste to the district landfill, which now will generate biogas to help fuel Progressive trucks.

The expanded project also will provide BioCNG fuel to other St. Landry Parish clients.

The St. Landry Parish BioCNG Vehicle Fuel Project received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Landfill Methane Outreach Program 2012 Project of the Year award.
