Cedar Falls Starts Asphalt Shingle Recycling


The city is hanging out its shingle, so to speak, in the recycling business.

An independent contractor started grinding some 800 tons of asphalt shingles at the Cedar Falls solid waste transfer station at East 15th and State streets this week. They will be reused by Aspro of Waterloo on road projects.

The arrangement, recently approved by the City Council and recommended by staff members, will likely net the city $19 per ton on the material. The effort will also save the time and expense of the dense material clogging city recycling equipment and of hauling the material to the landfill.

Nails are magnetically separated and also recycled.
