Unlike online retailers, department stores don’t have much of a focus on sustainability.
Luxury department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale have elaborate packaging that has always been a part of their experience, but it creates excess waste. And the lack of changes in the packaging make department stores less appealing to consumers.
Farfetch, a British-Portuguese online luxury fashion retail platform, implemented changes to its packaging process this past spring. They redesigned their packaging to reduce the amount of materials used, are encouraging brands to ship through their in-house shipping program so customers can receive products from multiple brands in one package and are offsetting their carbon footprint from shipping by funding efforts to reforest parts of Brazil.
