Global corrugated packaging manufacturer DS Smith has released a packaging alternative for seafood processors.

The seafood industry relies heavily on non-recyclable expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam boxes. The sustainable package from DS Smith is a no-leak, 100% water-resistant, fully recyclable, food safe box.

“DS Smith is excited to provide the North American seafood industry with a proven, 100% recyclable, fiber-based box that meets uncompromising standards for transporting fresh fish,” commented Steven Rose, DS Smith managing director, packaging, North America Packaging and Paper (NAPP), in a statement.

DryPack recyclable seafood containers can be packed with ice and keep fish fresh below 40 degrees for more than 40 hours in cold chain operations, and they are approved for air freight.

The boxes ship flat to seafood processors – requiring 81% less space than foam plastic EPS boxes –

The corrugated packaging solution recently received a World Packaging Association’s WorldStar Award for sustainable design.
