Republic Services has been tapped to manage the trash and recycling in Washington City, Utah. The ten-year agreement is raising concerns with council members about the opt-out option to the recycling program for residents.

However, the city council is concerned that residents have the ability to opt out of the recycling program if they are not interested in participating. Residents that had opted out of the 2015 recycling agreement will be grandfathered in under the new contract and other residents who are interested in opting out of the new program can do so between September 1 and November 30.

Fifty-two thousand of the county’s 64,000-65,000 residents are currently enrolled in the program. If the enrollment falls below 34 percent, the new program will not be financially feasible.
