Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection is investigating leachate seepage at the Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill.

According to the agency, leachate leaked from the facility into nearby Speers Run. The DEP arrived at the facility on Thursday, although the leak was first discovered Wednesday afternoon. The operators did not notify the agency, and the DEP cited them. 

The DEP's findings show a faulty screw caused the leachate to escape.
