Beaufort County, S.C. is encouraging its residents to compost and will look to educate the community on the benefits of doing so.

This week, leaders from the Beaufort County Solid Waste and Recycling program handed out more than 120 compost bins during a meeting intended to teach the community about composting. The hope is that residents will learn the effects of composting and the importance of it as the program goes on.

“We want to educate the public about what they can divert. Not only their yard scraps, which I think a lot of people are aware of, but also the food waste. That’s the component our grant is targeting, and also, we are targeting as well in Beaufort County," said Victoria Hoffman, Beaufort County Solid Waste and Recycling Program Manager.

Those in charge of the program are hoping that a grant from the USDA will elevate the program and allow them to start an education campaign on food waste diversion.
