The waste permit for a Southwaite, Carlisle, England facility has been suspended by the Environmental Agency due to issues of non-hazardous waste being stored in the wrong area.

The Thackwood Material Recycling Facility in Southwaite cannot accept any waste currently as the Waste Transfer Services have had their permit suspended. The suspension comes after it was discovered that the facility was storing non-hazardous waste in areas of the site that do not have sealed drainage. This creates risk of contaminated liquid entering water, potentially causing pollution to the environment.

Any waste brought to the site classifies as a criminal offense.

The consequences of the suspension require the operator to reduce the amount of waste being stored, reducing the risk of pollution.

Permits from the Environmental Agency are required for operation. This is granted after the Agency has confirmed that waste is being properly stored and disposed of. The permit means that operators must abide by the set rules to protect the environment.

“Enforcement officers have suspended the waste permit for Waste Transfer Services at Thackwood Material Recycling Facility,” said a spokesperson from the Environmental Agency.

“Members of the public and business in the area need to be aware that if you take your waste onto this site, you are committing a criminal offense. Effective regulation is vital to protect our air, land, and water from harm. That’s why the Environment Agency takes our responsibility to protect the environment very seriously.”
