If you’ve read Waste Age for any length of time, you’ll likely recognize Michael Hoffman’s name. Managing director for brokerage firm Wunderlich Securities Inc., Hoffman is an expert on waste and recycling industry financials, and regularly lends his expertise to this publication. Waste Age: What is your pet peeve?

Hoffman: People who are late to meetings.

Waste Age: What is your idea of the perfect day?

Hoffman: On the back of a horse riding over open country.

Waste Age: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Hoffman: “Life is not a dress rehearsal so live it to the fullest, leave it better than you found it and try not to hurt anyone along the way.”

Waste Age: What was the last book you read?

Hoffman: “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel.

Waste Age: What is your favorite movie?

Hoffman: “True Grit” (the original).

Waste Age: What is your favorite TV show?

Hoffman: “Justified”

Waste Age: Beatles or Rolling Stones?

Hoffman: Rolling Stones, of course.

Waste Age: What is the strangest piece of trash you’ve ever come across?

Hoffman: While this is not absolutely applicable to me, I have toured a lot of solid waste facilities; frilly underwear in a recycling picker line.

Waste Age: Do you prefer the beach or mountains?

Hoffman: Mountains.

Waste Age: Besides your family, what is the one thing you couldn’t live without?

Hoffman: Laughter.

Waste Age: If you could invite three people — living or dead — to a dinner party, who would they be?

Hoffman: Winston Churchill, Thomas Jefferson and Abigail Adams.

Waste Age: If you weren’t serving in your current role, what would you like to be?

Hoffman: A 10-goal polo player.

Waste Age: What is your favorite sports team?

Hoffman: The Baltimore Ravens/Baltimore Orioles. It used to be the Washington Redskins but they have the worst owner in football.

Waste Age: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

Hoffman: Healing.

Waste Age: What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve done?

Hoffman: Rode and won the Maryland Hunt Cup considered by most authorities to be one of the top ten toughest amateur athletic endeavors today.

Waste Age: What’s the one talent you have that not many people know about?

Hoffman: Amateur Huntsman of a pack of foxhounds in both the United States and Ireland.
