Summer is about to get a lot less cruel for San Antonio, Texas. No, not because it’s going to cool down, but because Balcones Recycling (Balcones) will be opening its latest recycling center, lessening the load at local landfills. Hopefully, Bananarama is into recycling.
On the verge of opening its bay doors to recyclable material sourced from San Antonio residents, Balcones welcomed members of the waste industry to check out its latest recycling campus: a whopping 145,000 sq ft, state-of-the-art facility that looks to build on the company’s success.
Balcones was nice enough to invite Waste360 to its grand opening of the new recycling facility, showing off all the innovations and machinery ready to take on the materials of the seventh largest city in the United States. Members of the waste industry, including yours truly, were treated to a range of country music and steel stairs, taking in calm before the storm of a brand-new recycling facility.
In the attached video you can see clips of a walkthrough of the recycling facility and some of my time spent at the facility.
This recycling center marks the 19th facility from Balcones, and it comes equipped with the ability to process 50 tons per hour thanks to systems from CP Group.

Once officially open, the facility will process residential and commercial single-stream material from San Antonio and surrounding communities utilizing a fully automated container line. This innovation leads it to be the most automated facility in the country.
“As we established when we first sought out this project, our goal is to deliver a recycling campus that is without peer anywhere in the country,” said Balcones President Adam Vehik. “This facility is living proof of our commitment to that goal.”
Along with recycling, the facility will serve the San Antonio community in several ways. The location will act as an educational hub providing workshops, and educational programs, and offering tours to see the machines in action.
Balcones’ contract with the City of San Antonio goes is set to commence on August 1, later this year.
