Ohio State’s Fred N. VanBuren professor of farm management, Brian Roe, will oversee a $2.5 million USDA pilot consumer campaign to reduce food waste in American households.

The program will see Ohio State partner with Rutgers University to put together food waste reduction and education campaigns in three U.S. cities. The pilot program will run for three years, providing the universities with vital information that will help inform future programs that the federal government is looking to put together.

Households in the pilot cities will receive educational materials that will inform families how to effectively plan meals, getting the most out of their shopping before food goes to waste by expiration or by leftovers going to waste.

“Materials like that can help consumers reduce the amount of food that they’re wasting, which usually results in financial savings for those homes because about 30% of food that people bring into their homes if often never eaten,” said Roe.
