Kewaunee County, Wisc., Board Votes Not to Expand Landfill

After a lengthy debate Tuesday night, the Kewaunee County Board voted 17-2-1 not to seek a license to operate Phase III of the Kewaunee County Landfill.

“This resolution does not mean we are voting to close the landfill,” said County Board Chairman Ron Heuer.

The board’s Solid Waste Committee has been researching options for the landfill for more than two years and has determined that the $5.5 to $6 million the county would have to borrow to implement Phase III to expand the landfill is not in the best financial interests of the county, said Larry Kirchman, chairman of the Highway/Solid Waste Committee.
