Commissioners Jailed for Landfill Protest

Lynn Schenkman

Atlanta -- County commissioners from Taliaferro County, Georgia, approximately 100 miles southeast of Atlanta, were jailed Oct. 14 for resisting plans to build a landfill in their county. News sources report that the three commissioners indicated a judge forced them to sign a letter saying the landfill plan by an Atlanta developer met with county zoning ordinances. The commissioners told news sources they will continue to protest the landfill. Approximately 300 supporters were outside the courthouse in Crawfordville, Ga., when the commissioners surrendered to authorities.
