With football season in full effect, stadiums across the United States are being filled with people every week.

One of these stadiums, Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA, home to the New England Patriots, hosts as many as 65,878 game-goers per game.

Anywhere that holds this many people is bound to become a hub for waste production. What is a good football game without a snack and something to drink, right?

With thousands of people enjoying themselves at this facility each week, a lot of trash is produced. It is estimated that within just one football season, the stadium will generate a total of 800 tons of post-recycled waste.

One garbage collection company has taken the ambitious leap to not only take on the duty of waste disposal at the stadium but to turn as much of this waste into usable energy.

That company is WIN Waste Innovations, a waste removal and recycling solutions provider serving the New England region.

WIN Waste Innovations is known for converting nearly 6.7 million tons of waste into renewable energy that is then turned back around to be used in the communities they serve. With this, WIN Waste Innovations is capable of powering more than 340,000 homes.

“Using our curb-to-grid approach, we can divert waste from landfills, recover a substantial amount of energy from waste, and recycle thousands of tons of metal on the back end of the process, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and conserving natural resources,” says Eric Speiser, VP of Sales, Marketing, and Communications at WIN Waste Innovations.

WIN Waste Innovations is employing this system in the stadium and will be collecting and processing its waste in a long-term partnership between the two parties.

“When the teams leave the field, we get to work,” says Speiser.

The provider collects all trash produced by sports games and concertgoers that is then hauled to waste-to-energy facilities. There, the waste is converted to renewable energy that is returned to local electric grids.

“In essence, the waste generated at the stadium helps power the televisions of many New Englanders on game days.”

The partnership is a mutually beneficial deal as the two sides pursue their own goals toward a more sustainable future.

By diverting waste from the waste stream into recycled materials and renewable energy, the collaboration allows for the two parties to eliminate hundreds of tons of waste.

“We are excited that within the first 10 weeks of the partnership we have diverted more than 375 tons of post-recycled waste from landfills,” Speiser states.

This converts to more than 275,000 kWh of renewable energy—a remarkable feat. In only ten weeks the program has already solidified itself as a viable model for waste reduction and energy production at large-scale event centers.

Another leg of this partnership is within the marketing sphere of WIN Waste Innovations.

“In addition to handling the waste and recycling, we have a marketing partnership that broadcasts the relationship in-game through virtual video boards, LED ring exposure, our logo on the containers inside and outside the stadium, a billboard on Route 1, and more.”

Going beyond the behind-the-scenes work, allows WIN Waste to make itself known for the hard work it is putting in to reduce waste and support Gillette Stadium and the New England Patriots in doing the same.

WIN Waste Innovations is actually comprised of 12 different waste, recycling, and disposal companies in the East Coast region that have all come together under one name; and the Win Waste name is fairly new.

This partnership allows for its introduction to the region it provides for.

“Knowing that we needed to introduce ourselves to the region, we wanted to partner with one of the most iconic organizations not only in the NFL but in the entire sports industry. We approached Kraft Sports Group with a proposal for a more sustainable waste disposal option, and we’ve been hard at work there since August 2022” shares Speiser.

The partnership between WIN Waste Innovations and Gillette Stadium has set a new precedent for what is possible with the large amounts of waste generated from sports stadiums and event centers.

“It is the first of its scale, but not the last.”

Taking the Gillette Stadium partnership as a win under its belt, WIN Waste Innovations is excited to march forward and push the bounds of what waste they can make use of.

“As a newly branded and rapidly growing company, opportunities like these are incredibly valuable and support a sustainable approach to disposing of post-recycled waste.”

WIN Waste Innovations is excited to announce its next partnership with the Boston Bruins and their home arena – TD Garden.
