Officials in Missoula County, Montana have approved a gas-to-power proposal for Republic Services.

The plan is to convert methane from a Republic landfill into energy. While the details and specifics are not yet available, the project will assist the county with its goal of 100% clean electricity by 2035.

A co-op between Flathead Electric and Missoula County currently provides energy to 1,600 homes. Republic representatives told the county they "could accommodate two generators of the size the Flathead landfill has in Missoula,"  said Diana Maneta, the county’s energy conservation and sustainability coordinator.

Republic Services currently has 75 renewable energy projects in the works.
