As Wenatchee, Wash. prepares for its annual Apple Blossom Festival, and the 100,000 visitors the event brings, organizers are hoping to build on last year’s recycling success.

Last year, the festival achieved a 50% reduction in landfill waste compared to 2022’s event. That effort is thanks to a coordinated attack from local Rotary Clubs, Winton Manufacturing Compost Works, WM, Sustainable NCW, Young Life, and the Apple Blossom staff. This year, organizers are looking to build on that success by expanding its Towards Zero Waste (TZW) program.

This year, the festival is making significant changes to increase the event’s waste reduction rate. Umpqua Bank Home Lending has joined as a sponsor and is aiding in purchasing compostable cups for the beer gardens. In addition, food vendors will have access to composting services and special waste stations will be set up where attendees can efficiently sort their waste.
