New York City Mayor Proposing New Mandate to Yard Waste Recycling

Mayor, Eric Adams has proposed new city yard waste recycling rules in New York City. These new rules will make it mandatory for residents to separate their leaf and yard waste.

Should the new city rule go into effect, the punishment for failing to compost yard waste would face similar fines to failing to recycle properly.

“Yard waste is the right place to start because it’s something New Yorkers already naturally separate,” Jessica Tisch, sanitation commissioner, told the New York Times. “There’s no real behavioral change required, and I think you have to ease into these mandates.”

This program will follow the same trajectory as the city’s new voluntary curbside composting program, which starts this week and looks to have full service to all residents by October 2024.
