Clearwater, Fla. is overhauling its recycling program in a massive way following a troubled past.

Solid Waste Recycling is trying to make things right with its customers with new leadership and a new contract. Last year, Clearwater recycled 8,000 tons of materials from customers, homes, and businesses which is a huge change from 2022 when the department was failing at its duties.

“For a period of time, it was reported in 2022 that no recycling was sent to the processing center,” said Solid Waste Director Kervin St. Aimie.

Assistant Director for Clearwater’s Solid Waste Department, Bryant Johnson, resigned after an investigation revealed that recycling wasn’t making it to the proper location. Recyclables instead went to the Pinellas County Solid Waste Disposal Complex with the rest of the other trash.

“Currently we are recycling all of our recycling products, we have a new contract with waste collection,” said Aimie.

Aimie is now serving as the director of Solid Waste and notes that a new contract with Waste Connections of St. Petersburg is in place.
