A new law hopes to keep methane emissions down in Oroville, Calif. and residents could be hit with fines for not following the new rules.

The new law states that residents will now need to put organic food waste into yard waste containers and not the usual trash bin. This change aims to reduce methane emissions by keeping organic waste out of landfills.

Those who fail to comply with the new law can be fined by the city. No date has been set as to when the city can begin fining people and for how much.

The city of Oroville is still in the onboarding process, according to Oroville Recycling Coordinator Victoria Padilla. No exact date was given for when the new recycling law will go into effect.
