Altoona Water Authority Reaches Nitrogen Discharge Limit

The Altoona Water Authority has reached it's allowed nitrogen discharge amount after high amounts of leachate processing.

Altoona Water Authority is expected to have brought in $2.3 million in revenue from treating landfill leachate. In the process, however, the organization has discharged nitrogen from the leachate process into a stream. This makes this level of processing unsustainable for the community meaning locals have to make the decision whether to accept the leachate or nitrogen. Believing the nitrogen is a more manageable issue, the Altoona Water Authority will continue to function but at a lower capacity.
