  • Philadelphia completed its citywide switch to single-stream recycling.

  • Midwest grocery store chain Jewel-Osco, Melrose Park, Ill., reached a milestone by selling 1 million reusable shopping bags. The chain began selling green bags in all of its 183 stores in August 2007.

  • Milwaukee reached a recycling milestone by collecting more than 1 million pounds of e-waste since 2006.

  • Waste Management, Houston, was named to Ethisphere Institute's 2008 list of the world's most ethical companies.

  • E.L. Harvey & Sons, Westborough, Mass., broke ground on its $20 million recycling complex in Hopkinton, Mass.

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection modified a permit for the Blue Ridge Landfill to receive 1,700 tons each day.

  • Home Depot, Atlanta, launched a national recycling program for compact fluorescent bulbs.

  • Waste Management, Houston, launched www.greenopolis.com, a Web site to educate about the environment and issue rewards for green behavior.

  • Waste Pro, Longwood, Fla., purchased two International DuraStar hybrid chassis, which will be used as recycling trucks.
