The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized several landfill gas-to-energy (GTE) projects for generating renewable energy while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The projects were recognized at the 12th Annual Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) Annual Conference.
“Our award winners demonstrate that through partnerships and innovation we can transform waste into environmental wealth,” said Robert Meyers, principal deputy assistant administrator for EPA Office of Air and Radiation, in a press release. “These projects, and others like them, not only address climate change, but also produce renewable energy and economic benefits for the local community.”
Among the projects recognized as LMOP Projects of the Year were the Granger Conestoga Landfill project in Morgantown, Pa.; the Green Energy Center in Grove City, Ohio; and the Greenville Gas Producers project in Greenville, S.C.
The LMOP Industry Partner award was given to Casella Waste Systems, Rutland, Vt., for its projects in Hampden, Maine, and in Angelica, Morrisonville and Seneca, N.Y.
Waco, Texas, and Lansing, Mich., won the LMOP Energy Partner awards. The LMOP Community Partner award was given to Seward County, Kansas.
