There is a growing push to divert more waste from American landfills. Charts comparing the amount of waste that’s recycled or converted to energy in each country, compared with what ends up in the ground, show that the United States is far behind Europe. This has generated calls from politicians and citizen groups to do better. It has also lead to aggressive legislation in cities and states mandating higher diversion rates.
