Heavy rain in Virginia Key caused the local wastewater facility to overflow.

On Wednesday afternoon the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department reported that heavy rain caused overflow at the Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant in Virginia Key. About 200,000 gallons overflowed from the sewer causing Miami-Dade County officials to announce no-swim advisories for several local beaches. The advisory will remain in effect until the Department of Health and the county’s Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources received back clear sample results for two days in a row.
