City Council members in Tucson, Ariz. have voted to approve of a new water treatment facility that will convert wastewater intro drinking water.

The new facility will be the first for southern Arizona and will use roughly $86 million worth of Burea of Reclamation funding for the build.

Jon Kmiec, Tucson Water Director, explained that the water will be treated through three phases to reach drinking water standards. The facility is also expected to save 56,000-acre feet of Coloardo River water in the next decade. Officials estimate the facility will be operational by early 2030.
