As the war rages on in Ukraine, garbage collectors in Kharkiv must continue working as waste builds up from the state of emergency.

Many apartments have been severely damaged and even partially destroyed due to the battles happening in the area, and this is contributing to a large portion of the waste the city is producing as some residents begin to return. Spoiled food waste left in houses after people were forced to quickly evade their homes and building rubble account for most of the trash being brought to the street. 

Trash collectors were issued bulletproof vests and the loud crashes and booms of artillery in the distance are reminders of just how close they are to the front lines.
