Michigan Trash Increase Heightens Interest in Recycling

As more trash finds its way to the curb, in the wake of a report by the Department of Environmental Quality officials are encouraging users to make better use of their recycling bins.

With $435 million worth of recyclable items, Karen Tommasulo, spokeswoman for the DEQ, pointed out the need to reuse wood, paper, plastic and metal items.

"We used to be a leader with our bottle bill but recycling technology has come a long way, so recycling bottles and cans represents a tiny fraction of what can be used," she said.
