The U.S. Department of Energy is giving researchers at Tennessee Tech University a grant worth nearly $5 million that will be used to help improve the electric vehicle battery recycling ecosystem.

The U.S. Department of Energy is giving researchers at Tennessee Tech University a grant worth nearly $5 million that will be used to help improve the electric vehicle battery recycling ecosystem.

Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the school, Pingen Chen, will act as the project lead for the university. Chen’s previous work has secured millions in federal grants that have contributed to electric vehicle adoption. Tennessee Tech is the only school in the southeast to receive such grant.

“We hear concerns in rural communities when people are considering an electric vehicle – what do we do with the battery when the vehicle is retired?” said Chen. “Our goal is to figure out the most efficient, cost-effective and safest way to recycle these batteries at the end of their life cycle.”
