Looking to improve the recycling rate of its home state, Recycle Utah is proposing a new facility and remote collection sites to address ongoing challenges.
The proposed center, a 30,000-square-foot, $25 million facility, will put the community on a greener path thanks to a strategic study based on Summit County’s landfill situation and low diversion rate. According to Recycle Utah, Summit County diverts 12% of its waste from landfills for recycling or composting, falling way behind the national average of 32%.
According to Tim Loveday, Summit County Solid Waste Superintendent, an increase in waste tonnage in the area is due to the tourism economy and short-term rentals. Summit County sees 7.62 pounds of waste per day from visitors plus residents, above the standard resident average of 4.9 pounds per day.
